    Key mechanics

    Professional tax in West Bengal

West Bengal levies professional tax on employees and on persons carrying on a trade or profession, capped at Rs 2,500 a year by the constitutional limit. Employers register (PTRC) to deduct and remit employees' professional tax on the state slab, and a self-employed person or business enrols (PTEC) for their own. The employee deduction is available only to an old-regime taxpayer, not under the default new regime.

West Bengal professional tax is capped at Rs 2,500 a year (PTRC employer / PTEC self-employed); the employee deduction applies only on the old regime. (West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act 1979; Constitution Article 276 (Rs 2,500 cap))

Stamp duty on property and documents

West Bengal's property stamp duty is broadly in the 6 to 7% range (higher for higher-value properties and in municipal areas), plus a registration fee, with periodic state rebates in some bands. Stamp duty also applies to business documents such as lease and partnership deeds. Rates and any rebates are state-set and change periodically, so verify the current figure against the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue before a property or lease transaction.

West Bengal property stamp duty is broadly 6 to 7% plus a registration fee (with periodic rebates); verify current rates against the state directorate. (Indian Stamp Act as applicable in West Bengal + state amendments; verify against the West Bengal Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue)

    Worked example

    Debashish — Kolkata, WB

trader registering for professional tax and leasing premises (2026-27)

Debashish runs a trading business in Kolkata with staff and leases a shop.

He enrols for a PTEC (own professional tax, capped at Rs 2,500) and a PTRC for staff. Stamp duty applies to his lease deed and to any property purchase at the West Bengal rate (broadly 6 to 7% plus registration), so he checks the current figure and any rebate band with the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue. If he is on the old regime, the professional tax he pays is deductible; on the new regime it is not.
